I’m in my bed in Chongqing trying to fight off a bad cold. I’ve just come from a Bio-art conference in Perth, Australia… lots of presentations on immune system, DNA, and new, weird, monstrous life.
Now I’m thinking of agonists and antagonists: molecule shapes that fit either productively or disruptively with the tiny receptors in our bodies. Both are a type of relationship. My body has been broken up by this illness that has kept me in bed trying to recover and confuses my thoughts with fever.
The familiar set of technologies I use for making sense of the world and connecting to others is useless here; Facebook, Google Maps, Gmail are all blocked, so I try to get through with an unreliable VPN and start to figure out some new ones, some local ones. I’m using them to try to communicate, to look up words and learn the language.
I’m learning Chinese while the fever still rages, and to me many of the sounds and symbols spark false connections: similar enough to make me think I’ve got it, but then wrong. I have nights filled with dreams of these imaginary symbols and words, my subconscious trying to deal with the deluge of new meanings. The words, sounds and symbols of this new language get mixed up and make unhelpful links that just end up confusing and frustrating me.
A emigre German artist buys me medicine from the Chinese pharmacy, and I look it up via my VPN to wikipedia to find what “Amantadine Hydrochloride” does. It is prescription in most countries, but here we can get it over the counter. The wikipedia page tells me the mechanism through which is works – blocking the proton channel the virus gets its energy through. A tiny tube connecting it to the outside world. But it also tells me the CDC found 100% of influenza have mutated to change the structure of this channel and are now resistant to the drug. I think of the Great Firewall of China and its attempts to automatically learn and block VPNs, and this feels like a very similar relationship.
The illness I’ve got here: at the end of it my T-cells will bind perfectly to the shape of the virus, and it will be whisked away to be digested. My body finally making sense of things much better than I ever could, but the learning process was fever, cold, coughing, weak and vulnerable.
